The Foundation for Hispanic Education Announces First Annual Semillas Project Fundraiser with Celebrity Guest Speakers, Honorees
Award-winning Actors Luis Guzman, Antonio Jaramillo and Rick Najera to initiate New After-School Enrichment Digital Media and Health Program, March 11 at Mexican Heritage Plaza
SAN JOSE, CA – The Foundation for Hispanic Education has announced its first annual Semillas Project Fundraiser, an after-school digital media and health program, to be held on Saturday, March 11 at 5:30 p.m. at Mexican Heritage Plaza, 1700 Alum Rock Ave, San Jose, CA 95116. NBC’s Shades of Blue actor Antonio Jaramillo will serve as keynote, actor Luis Guzman will receive the Humanitarian Award and actor-writer-comedian Rick Najera will serve as MC.
The Semillas Project is an after-school enrichment digital media and health awareness program at the Foundation for Hispanic Education’s (TFHE) three charter high schools: Luis Valdez Leadership Academy, Latino College Preparatory Academy, and Roberto Cruz Leadership Academy. The project-based learning experience consists of a cohort of students creating Public Service Announcement (PSA) videos and associated visual media to dissect and address prevalent health issues in the Latino community. The Semillas Project is part of El Teatro LVLA, which is a media production program curated by Luis Valdez Leadership Academy’s Digital Media Arts Director Emiliano Valdez. All content was created in conjunction with program development partners the Silicon Valley American Diabetes Association and iHeart Media, Inc.
Actor Antonio Jaramillo, co-star of NBC’s hit show Shades of Blue with Jennifer Lopez and other notable credits such as Rosewood, The Mentalist, CSI: Miami, Burn Notice, Savages and more will serve as keynote speaker for the special event. Actor Luis Guzman (CBS’s Code Black, Keanu, The Do Over, Carlitos Way, Q&A, Boogie Nights, Magnolia, Punch Drunk Love, Traffic, The Count of Monte Cristo, Maldeamores, Nothing Like the Holidays+) will receive the First Annual Semillas Project Humanitarian Award. Rick Najera, an award-winning writer (East Los High, MAD TV, In Living Color, Nothing Like the Holidays), director (CBS Diversity Sketch Comedy Showcase, Latinologues), speaker (Google, Harvard, Stanford, CNN, The World Bank) author (Almost White: Forced Confessions of a Latino in Hollywood) will serve as the event’s MC.
The First Annual Semillas Project Fundraiser will take place on Saturday, March 11 at Mexican Heritage Plaza, 1700 Alum Rock Ave, San Jose, CA 95116. VIP Reception, cocktails and hors d’ouevers will start at 5:30 p.m. and event runs 6:45 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
