Writer / Performer Rick Najera Adds Comedic Magic in New Film, Taco Shop

New Slapstick Comedy is a Journey for Taco Supremacy Starrings Tyler Posey, Felipe Esparza, & Paula Jai-Parker

HOLLYWOOD, CA – May 1, 2018 – Actor-Writer-Comedian, Rick Najera (East Los High, Nothing Like The Holidays, In Living Color) co-stars in the new comedy, Taco Shop which he also co-wrote the screenplay with Oskar Toruno.  The film is set to launch in select theaters May 4 and on DVD and digital on May 1 from GVN Releasing via Sony Pictures Home Entertainment.

“Rick Najera is an accomplished talent with an impressive background in urban sketch comedy and we were glad to get him on board,” said producer Moctezuma Esparza.

In this slapstick comedy, Najera plays Gil, the owner of a taco shop called Taco Dollar, and Smokes played by Tyler Posey (Truth or Dare, Teen Wolf, Maid in Manhattan) fights to keep his job after a gourmet taco truck parks across the street and threatens its survival. An all-out war ensues as Bruce (Brian Huskey, Bob’s Burgers) and his squad challenge the crew of Taco Dollar for taco supremacy. Taco Shop also stars Felipe Esparza (Superstore, Last Comic Standing), Paula Jai-Parker (Ray Donovan, NCIS Los Angeles), Carlos Alazraqui (Elena of Avalor), Jill-Michele Melean (MAD TV), Dan Bakkedahl (VEEP), Eric Roberts (The Expendables) and more.

Rick Najera is an award-winning screenwriter, performer, Broadway playwright, speaker, author and comedian with credits in film, TV, radio, theatre and Broadway. He is the creator and host of Latino Thought Makers, a national interview series featuring America’s most influential Latinos and changing the narrative in America through this motivational leadership platform, also available on SoundCloud. He is the author of four books including his latest, Almost White: Forced Confessions of a Latino In Hollywood and stage play Latinologues on Broadway, which made him one of the few Latinos ever to write and star in their own play on Broadway. Najera is a pioneer of live sketch comedy and began his career in entertainment writing on the hit show, In Living Color,  in which Bruno Mars recently paid homage to in his music video ‘Finesse’ featuring Cardi B.

 

“There hasn’t been a Cheech and Chong-type comedy in years and I wanted to write a fun comedy because we all need laughter,” said Najera.

Taco Shop was directed by Joaquin Perea, produced by Robert A. Parada and Moctesuma Esparza (Selena), executive produced by Oskar Toruno, Martin Torres and Rick Najera and co-produced by Sandra Avila and Joaquin Perea.
