La Presencia Latina: A New Framework for Equity
Elected officials, entertainers, community leaders to discuss Census, scholarships awards and more at Illinois Legislative Latino Caucus Foundation Conference
Chicago, IL— The Illinois Legislative Latino Caucus Foundation (ILLCF) invites the public to attend its scholarship luncheon and discussion of the growing power and influence of Chicago’s Latino community.
The conference is set to take place 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, November 22 at Hilton Chicago/Oak Brook Hills Resort & Conference Center, 3500 Midwest Rd., Oak Brook, Illinois 6052.
This year’s keynote speaker will be award-winning screenwriter, producer and performer Rick Najera, who in addition to writing for Emmy-nominated television series has starred on Broadway in his award-winning play Latinologues.
Panel discussions will cover the Census, education, voting, access and infrastructure and more. A Q&A with audience participation follows the luncheon, with comments from Congressman Jesus “Chuy” Garcia. Stacey Baca of ABC 7 News will emcee the event.
Panelists include:
- Dan Hynes, Illinois Deputy Governor for Budget and Economy, who will address access, accountability, and opportunity from an economic standpoint
- Christian Mitchell, Illinois Deputy Governor for Public Safety, Infrastructure, Energy and Environment, who will speak on topics relating to access and infrastructure
- Sol Flores, Illinois Deputy Governor for Human Services, who will address homelessness and poverty in the Latino community
- Jesse Ruiz, Illinois Deputy Governor for Education, who will talk about education in Latino communities
- Dr. Julie A. Dowling, Associate Professor of Latino/Latina Studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, who will talk about Census redistricting as it relates to Latino racial identity
- Lizette Escobedo, Census Director at NALEO, who will address Census redistricting and political and social justice
- Griselda Vega Samuel, Midwest Regional Counsel for the Mexican American Legal Defense Education Fund, which promotes civil and human rights
- Miguel del Valle, President of the Chicago Board of Education and Co-founder of the ILLCF
During lunch, ILLCF will present Awards that honor the 2019-2020 recipients of ILLCF college scholarships.
Since its establishment in 2002, The Illinois Legislative Latino Caucus Foundation (ILLCF) has been a voice for and a champion of Latino populations throughout the state. IILCF’s mission is to empower Latino leaders through a push for political and economic equity.
